Closing the Loop: Resource Recovery and Biochar Production in Minnesota

Mavitec Environmental is providing the technology for the final stage of resource recovery at a landmark renewable gas project in Minnesota. The facility is designed to process 75,000 tons of organic material annually, turning a complex waste stream into valuable renewable resources.

Thermal Conversion of Digestate

In this facility, organic material is processed through high-solids anaerobic digestion to produce approximately 200,000 MMBtu of renewable natural gas (RNG) annually. Following the digestion stage, the solid fraction of the digestate is separated for further treatment.

Mavitec technology is integrated to thermally convert this solid digestate into Biochar. This ensures that the material is transformed into a stable, carbon-rich product rather than being transported for landfill disposal. The facility is expected to produce around 8,000 tons of biochar each year.

Addressing Persistent Contaminants

A key benefit of this thermal conversion is the destruction of persistent contaminants. By processing material in a controlled, oxygen-starved environment, the system is designed to break down PFAS and microplastics typically found in municipal organic waste. This prevents these pollutants from returning to the environment through traditional disposal methods.

Biochar: From Residual to Asset

The resulting Biochar is a stable, nutrient-rich material with a wide range of applications, including soil improvement, filtration, and carbon sequestration. By producing a clean end-product, the project avoids the rising costs and long-term liabilities associated with landfilling while maximizing the commercial and environmental value of every ton of incoming organic waste.

Environmental Integrity and Compliance

To ensure the facility remains a “good neighbor” to the surrounding community, the installation features a high-efficiency odour treatment section. This system is specifically designed to meet Minnesota’s rigorous environmental and air quality standards, ensuring full compliance while maximizing resource recovery.
